About the Position

Since 1948, we’ve been handcrafting ceramic tableware that is both beautiful to look at and satisfying to hold. Households, museums, and designers worldwide admire our limited-production cups, plates, bowls, and serving pieces, for their simple, timeless beauty and functional everyday use. Among the houseboats and artist studios is our original 1959 factory, where our clay is made, and our dinnerware shapes are formed, glazed, trimmed and fired. 

The Forming Generalist is responsible for forming dinnerware. Depending on the piece, forming will be done using a RAM press, an SKK plate roller, an SKK bowl roller, an old bowl machine, or a mug machine.

Essential Job Functions

_ Organizing finished ware and loading onto carts

_ Inspecting finished ware for quality issues and report problems to the supervisor

_ Operate Ram press machine safely and efficiently

_ Learn each item’s forming and handling requirements

_ Operate forming machines safely and efficiently

_ Learn each item’s forming and handling requirements

_ Loading, unloading, and cleaning mold sets for use

_ Handling and stacking formed clay dinnerware (greenware) carefully

_ Handling and cleaning molds

_ Recognizing shapes, molds, clay bodies, product, SKUs

_ Collecting volume and quality information

_ Recognizing and understanding changes in dryer temperature

_ Fetching clay from the clay room

_ Returning scraps to the slip house

_ General ancillary support for the forming process

_ Operating the mug machine

_ Operating the SKK plate roller and the SKK bowl roller

_ Operating the old bowl machine

General Requirements

_ Desire to work in a plant environment and to be “hands on”

_ Great people skills: must be patient, flexible, and calm

_ Excellent communication skills

_ Excellent attention to detail

_ Ability to enhance a team

_ Ability to follow strict safety guidelines

_ Ability to follow instructions accurately and in a timely manner

Physical Requirements

_ Must be able to lift molds (10-25 lbs.) and load into dryer; up to 1000+ pieces per day

_ Lifting clay (20-30lbs) and transferring it from tables to clay cutter consistently throughout the day

_ Repetitive motion (hand jolly, machines, wrist elbow shoulders)

_ Safely operating a pallet jack to transport molds to and from the forming machine

_ Other activities, including climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, repetitive motion, grasping, and feeling

Visual Acuity Requirements (including color, depth perception, and field vision)

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and inspecting materials; visual inspection involving small defects, small objects, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and visual checks of materials and machinery. The worker will also need visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate has very good attention to detail, works efficiently and is always mindful of quality. MUST follow safety procedures. Must have a positive attitude and foster a team environment. MUST be willing to learn from  experienced personnel during a thorough training period. Good communication skills are required.

Schedule

_ 40 regularly scheduled hours per week, Monday-Friday, 6am-2:30pm. Overtime may be available and required

Compensation
Hourly based on Union Wage Scale
