SF Clay Studio Assistant - Part Time

Role Summary

This is a part-time, 3 days a week role that has the potential to go to full time. The position will support small-volume edition of slipcast and hand thrown ceramic designs as part of the Heath Clay Studio program in San Francisco. This is part of the broader Heath Clay Studio initiative which, under the direction of Tung Chiang, seeks to explore and extend the legacy of Heath Design through explorations of form, glaze technique, and more. Since its initiation a year ago, the Heath Clay Studio program brings these unique explorations to life through small run, curated collections.  

We are looking for a self motivated individual with attention to detail and a passion for studio scale production pottery to work alongside the studio manager.  A good candidate will have worked as a production potter beyond the educational setting and be proficient in wheel throwing, slip-casting and glazing while being able to communicate and work efficiently within a small studio.

 

Essential Role Responsibilities

This role is for an experienced production potter who is interested in learning/adopting the Clay Studio’s approach to designing and making in order to produce in accordance with established studio practice. In this position you will be responsible for:

_ Throwing repetitive forms on the wheel based on technical drawings, with a keen eye for detail and the ability to recognize subtle differences in design.

_ Cast, clean, and prepare slipcast ware for firing with an emphasis on quality control and attention to detail.

_ Load and unload electric kilns.

_ Use and maintain the glaze spray gun.

_ Clean and pack finished work for delivery.

_ Manage and use time efficiently.
_ Communicate and document work progress daily.

_ Be able to handle general studio maintenance and engineer solutions

_ Maintain a clean and safe workspace.

_ Coordinate with creative, production, operations, and retail teams to ensure tasks are completed on time and information is shared in a timely way

 

Qualifications

_ 3 years minimum studio pottery experience

_ Must have strong throwing ability on the potter’s wheel

_ Glazing experience with a spray gun

_ Working knowledge of the slip casting and mold making process

_ Experience loading and maintaining electric kilns

 

Physical Requirements

_ Lifting 50lbs

_ Standing for most of the day.  All workstations are standing

_ Loading kiln shelves carefully

_ Lifting 5 gallon glaze buckets onto and off of carts

_ Wedging 5+lbs of clay in preparation of throwing
